Round 16 of the United Rugby Championship is upon us and with just three rounds remaining including this one, the playoff race is heating up with the top eight teams qualifying. We look at the latest results, how the table is shaping up, and have a go at predicting the handicaps before sharing bets later in the week.

Update: Munster v Ulster

Posted 25 April 16h02

Ulster are involved in the Challenge Cup semi’s next week and they are fielding what is basically a development team here. This could backfire as it is not impossible they could fall from 5th at the start of the weekend to 9th if other results go against them.

The handicap has moved from -21.5 to -29.5 Munster.

I am going to sit this one out

Bet: Scarlets v Bulls

Posted 25 April 16h01

1 unit winning margin 11-20 points at 57/20 at Betxchange

The Bulls are -12.5 and they have named a Bok laden side for this one as they look to build on last weeks hammering of the Dragons in Wales.

A win here will go a long to banking a top 8 spot and while I think the Scarlets can give some cheek early I am expecting a fairly comfortable away win.

The points line is 51.5 and the model is suggesting a cautious approach.

Bet: Lions v Connacht

Posted 25 April 10h31

3 units under 64.5 points at 0.88/1 at Pokerbet

Connacht are 9th on the log but only 4 points behind the Lions in 4th place so this is a massive game as far as playoffs go.

The Lions are -18.5 and points are set at 64.5.

It has been raining a lot in Joburg this week and while the pitch has been holding up quite well I am expecting an arm wrestle in some muggy conditions.

I have been burnt going unders in Lions games but at 63.5 in a game that has plenty of meaning for both teams I am going in again with a confident strike.

Bet: Stormers v Glasgow

Posted 25 April 10h24

3 units (1-5) Glasgow +8.5 at 0.87/1 at WSB

Glasgow were blown away by the Lions last week but I am expecting far better from them in Cape Town against a Stormers side that started 21 point favourites against Connacht and lost the match.

Glasgow are +8.5 and while tempted by a straight win play I am going to stick with the handicap here.

The points line is 49.5 and the conditions look good for the most part although the forecast I looked at suggests a slight chance of showers towards the end of the game.

Bet: Benetton v Leinster

Posted 25 April 00h31

3 units (1-5) Leinster over 15.5 1st half points at 10/11 at Pokerbet

This handicap has moved from Leinster -8.5 to -13.5 after team selection (I projected -16.5). Bookies were expecting Leinster to field a weakened team ahead of next weeks big semi-final in the Investec Champions Cup but they are clearly looking to learn lessons from previous seasons and want to get the job done here.

That has me eyeing the half time handicap and half time points and in what looks like good conditions I am looking for Leinster to put this one to bed before getting their big guns onto the bench.

The points line is 51.5 and the model is suggesting a cautious approach but I am looking for action.

Bet: Friday Night Double

Posted 24 April 07h20

1 unit over 46.5 Cardiff v Ospreys/Zebre win at 2.49/1 at Betxchange

The 3 Friday night games overlap so I am going to focus on the Sharks game but will have an interest in the other 2.

Cardiff who are missing a few playershost the Ospreys and are still in the playoff positions are -1.5 and the points line in what looks like being clear conditions is 46.5

I would expect Cardiff to be up for this but they do look stretched and I am going to go overs here a bet that would of arrived in 4 of the last 5 meetings between the sides.

In the Zebre v Dragons match I am on the home team at just over 8/10. They almost beat Edinburgh away last week and face a Dragons team that must have one eye on next weeks semi-final against Montpellier.

I may be missing something here but the home team look the play.

The model is not strong on anything in the Cardiff game and at current lines is also sitting the Zebre game out having spotted the Dragons +4.5 early in the week.

Bet: Edinburgh v Sharks

Posted 24 April 06h50

2 units (1-5) Edinburgh win at 17/10 at WSB

Edinburgh are gone and the Sharks have nothing more than a mathematical chance of reaching the playoffs after last weeks loss to the Ospreys. With little on the line other than pride I find myself leaning to the home team at a handicap of +4.5.

The Sharks have named Masuku at 12 which seems a strange move and I think it will be exploited by Edimburgh who I am backing to win the game.

The points line of 49.5 lookswell set in what looks like being good conditions although given how little is on the line I would be leaning overs.

The model is not strong on anything for this game.

Round 16 Handicaps

Posted 20 April 17h45

Below are the Monday handicaps at Betxchange in brackets next to mine

Cardiff Rugby -8.5 (-4.5) vs Ospreys
Edinburgh +2.5 (+4.5) vs Sharks
Zebre Parma -4.5 (-9.5) vs Dragons - Dragons have a Challenge Cup semi the next weekend

DHL Stormers -3.5 (-6.5) vs Glasgow Warriors
Lions -10.5 (-11.5) vs Connacht
Munster -7.5 (-18.5) vs Ulster - I see Ulster play a Challenge Cup semi the next weekend
Scarlets +12.5 (+9.5) vs Vodacom Bulls
Benetton +16.5 (+8.5) vs Leinster - I had not taken the Champions Cup semi-final the next week into account

Some big differences especially the Munster and Benetton games but the bookies are correct so no moves for me

Handicap Projections for Round 16

Here are my handicap projections for this weekend – I suspect I will be well out on a few of these as I don’t have a real feel for what team selections we will see

Cardiff Rugby -8.5 vs Ospreys
Edinburgh +2.5 vs Sharks
Zebre Parma -4.5 vs Dragons

DHL Stormers -3.5 vs Glasgow Warriors
Lions -10.5 vs Connacht
Munster -7.5 vs Ulster
Scarlets +12.5 vs Vodacom Bulls
Benetton +16.5 vs Leinster

ROUND 15 RESULTS

Edinburgh 31 v 30 Zebre – Edinburgh were -18 and narrowly averted a huge upset

Ulster 21 v 29 Leinster – Ulster were -5.5 but were well beaten and my under 49.5 play just missed

Dragons 7 v 47 Bulls – Bulls started -14.5 having moved from 11.5 and they delivered for punters with a big win. I went with Dragons under 16.5 which was a comfortable winner.

DHL Stormers 24 v 33 Connacht – The Stormers were -21.5 and looked well in control at one stage. I never got involved beyond a last try scorer play which never arrived

Lions 54 v 12 Glasgow Warriors – The Oracle said the -7.5 Lions was missing a digit on Thursdays show and he was spot on. I got this horribly wrong with a Glasgow ML play.

Scarlets 24 v 28 Cardiff Rugby – I had thrown in the towel and thank goodness as would have been on Scarlets -1.5. They also looked well in control of this and let it slip.

Benetton 15 v 45 Munster – Munster were -2.5 for this one and blew Benetton away

Ospreys 21 v 17 Sharks – I liked the under 49.5 here which would of arrived but I never got involved in a game where the Sharks started slight favourites and simply had to win.

LEAGUE TABLE UPDATE

At the top, the Glasgow Warriors (55 pts) remain 1st despite their heavy loss.

The Stormers (51 pts) and Leinster (51 pts) are now level in 2nd and 3rd, with Leinster building momentum at the right time of the season.

The Lions (48 pts) move into 4th after a dominant win, while Ulster (47 pts) and Munster (46 pts) remain firmly in the playoff positions.

The race for the final qualifying spots is extremely tight. Cardiff (46 pts) and the Bulls (45 pts) currently occupy 7th and 8th respectively.

Just outside the top eight, Connacht (44 pts) are right on the cut line and their win over the Stormers has kept their playoff hopes very much alive.

Further back, the Ospreys (34 pts) and Sharks (34 pts) look to be running out of time, while the rest of the field is effectively out of contention.

With so little separating teams around the playoff positions (4 points between 4th and 9th), every match now carries significant weight.
