Group 1 Update

At the time of writing group leaders England were preparing to play Sri Lanka on Monday. England top the group with 3 wins from 3 and a fantastic net run rate and should they beat Sri Lanka they will be through to the semi finals. That would leave one of Australia and South Africa, who both have 2 wins and 1 defeat the most likely contenders to reach the semi finals although West Indies (1 win, 2 defeats) would have a small chance.

South Africa

After losing their opening game to Australia by 5 wickets at this venue the Proteas have completed back to back wins over West Indies (8 wickets) and most recently Sri Lanka (4 wickets).

The Sri Lanka game went to the wire with South Africa chasing 143 for victory left needing 15 off the final over. They got up thanks to 2 David Miller sixes and then a Rabada boundary off the penultimate ball. Shamsi took 3 wickets for 17 runs and was named Man of the Match and Bavuma's 46 was the top Proteas score.

This was how South Africa lined up last time out.

Temba Bavuma (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, Reeza Hendricks, David Miller, Dwaine Pretorius, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi

With a game against England still to come in this group the Proteas still have no margin for error and their odds to win the tournament are now around 10/1 and they are 9/2 to reach the final.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh are no longer in contention having already lost all 3 of their Super 12 matches matches. They started with a 5 wicket defeat to Sri Lanka before being blown away by England by an 8 wicket margin. They needed to beat West Indies last time out and found themselves chasing 143 for victory after a late WI blitz. It proved to be a thriller but despite Liton Das making 44 and Mahmudullah not out 31 off 24 balls they came up just short, going down by 3 runs.

Soumya Sarkar, Mohammad Naim, Liton Das (wk), Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah (c), Afif Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed

Head to Head

Overall the teams have met 6 times with South Africa winning all 6 of those matches.

The most recent meetings came in SA in November 2017 when the Proteas won both matches by 20 runs and 83 runs.

The Betting

South Africa are currently trading at around 3/10 to win the game and Bangladesh can be backed at around 27/10

South Africa are 6/10 to hit the most 6's with Bangladesh 2/1 and a tie is 6/1

The highest first 6 overs total market has South Africa at 11/20 and Bangladesh are 27/20

The Verdict

The Proteas have a better net run rate than Australia and West Indies and this looks like an opportunity to boost it given Bangladesh are no longer a factor in the race for a semi final spot.

It's a one sided betting heat but I will have an interest in the top SA bowler market. Shamsi hit top form against Sri Lanka last time out and could well go in again.

Bets: Top SA Bowler Shamsi at 28/10
