Newcastle

Newcastle crashed out of the FA Cup at the weekend, 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday of League 1. They are still in the mix for a potential Wembley trip in this competition after a 1-0 home win over Bournemouth in the previous round. Prior to that they saw off Crystal Palace on spot kicks after a 0-0 draw in another home tie and their cup run began with a 2-1 win away to Tranmere.

In recent EPL matches since the World Cup break Newcastle coasted to a 3-0 win at Tuesday's opponents Leicester on Boxing Day. They took early control with Wood and Almiron scoring inside 7 minutes and Joelinton added a third before half time. Since then they played out a 0-0 draw at league leaders Arsenal and another goalless stalemate at home to Leeds. They remain third in the standings having lost just the 1 league game so far, 2-1 at Liverpool at the end of August.

Leicester City

Leicester joined the fray in the second round and their tie away to Stockport went all the way to spot kicks after a goalless draw. Leicester held their nerve from the spot to set up a home tie with Newport which they won 3-0. In the Round of 16 they were 3-0 winners at MK Dons of League 1 and they have also progressed in the FA Cup with a 1-0 win at Gillingham at the weekend.

Leicester were in good form in the EPL prior to the World Cup but their defeat at home to Newcastle on their return to league action was followed by a 2-1 loss at Liverpool and 1-0 home defeat to Fulham and they are just 2 points above the drop zone.

The Betting:

Newcastle are currently 0.63/1 to win the game with the draw at just under 3/1 and Leicester can be backed at around 42/10

A game of 3 goals or more is priced at 0.83/1 and it's 9/10 for both teams to score.

The Verdict:

Leicester were all at sea when the teams met in the Premier League on Boxing Day and if Newcastle opt to field a full strength side it would need a major turnaround for them to avoid another defeat.

Newcastle rested a few regular starters in the FA Cup defeat at the weekend, it was still a surprise to see them bow out and team selection will tell us plenty about home much of a priority the EFL Cup is.

It's always tough to make a call on these EFL Cup matches when you don't have a team sheet. Gut feel is there will be enough hunger out there for a decent and

more even contest than the league game produced and I will take my chances with both sides to find the net.

Bet: Both teams to score? (yes) at 9/10
