WSB Logo Orange 80x80The DP World Tour heads to Durban this weekend as the players look to take on the second oldest National Open in the world. The Durban Country Club place host to the Investec South African Open and we select 4 players to take on the bookmakers.

The South African Open, first played in 1893, is only younger than the Open Championship itself and is co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour.

The Course

Durban Country Club plays to a par 72 and is a relatively short 6,691 yards by modern standards. After undergoing huge renovations recently, the course will look new to almost all the players. It has a links like feel but with tree lined fairways and big sand dunes penalising players for wayward shots. Huge undulations require the ball to be put in the right place off the tee and with approach shots.

Situated just off the coast of the Indian Ocean it is often battered by the winds coming off the ocean and catching the better conditions (pure luck) can be crucial if the wind howls.

Accuracy from tee to green will be essential all weekend.

SELECTIONS:

Shaun Norris at 36.00.

It comes as no surprise that the last six South African Opens have all been won by South Africans and with a number of the top South African golfers not playing this week, Norris has a massive opportunity in front of him. He has finished in the top ten twice already this year and has also bagged a sixteenth-place finish and just 2 months ago he captured the Alfred Dunhill and Leopard Creek.

Suggested bet: Shaun Norris each way at 36.00.

Laurie Canter at 15.00

Canter has got off to a flying start this year. He won a few weeks ago at the Bahrain Championship and finished third at the Dubai Desert Classic only two shots off the lead. Canter was able to do this in two of the tougher fields of the DP World Tour and will look to take advantage of this week’s weaker field in Durban.

Laurie Canter each way at 15.00.

Daniel van Tonder at 41.00

Van Tonder has been on a remarkable run of form on the Sunshine Tour this year. With two wins, a runner-up and another two top ten finishes in his last five starts he is in flying form going into his home Open. He will be looking at this weekend as an opportunity to qualify for more DP World Tour events and will be hungry to put his name near the top of the leaderboard.

Daniel van Tonder each way at 41.00 and a top 10 finish at 4.60.

Angel Ayora at 36.00

I was searching for a bigger priced player but keep on coming back to the young Spaniard who played brilliantly in Leopard Creek in December. He was T14 in the Qatar Masters in his penultimate start and T20 in Kenya in his last start so he is in decent form and he is one I have in the notebook.

Angela Ayora each way at 36.00
