Race 1
MOUNTAIN HIGH took on a competitive field in the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Nursery last time. It must be noted that the horse that finished fourth that day has come out and won since. Her debut effort when third over 1200m at the Vaal, catches the eye. The daughter of Rafeef will love the rise to 1450m and from her good draw of three, she should be the one to beat.
VARVARA has shown some improvement in each of her races to date. The daughter of Var is a progressive type and she may be the one to fill the exacta spot in this field.
RADIANT HEAT is better than her last start as she was reported to be not striding out. She is back against her own sex and can finish in the placings.
Race 2
LEAD THE CHARGE stayed on at the finish over 1200m at the Vaal last time, but found one too good in the form of Gorgeous Klein. The son of Lancaster Bomber is a progressive type and will love the rise to 1450m. From pole position, he should be the one to beat.
MESSALINA has finished third in her last three starts. She was unlucky last time as she had to be switched for running room at the 150m mark. She finished 0.25 lengths behind the top choice, three runs ago. The pair meet on the same weight terms today and there should not be much separating them at the finish.
ZIP CODE showed pace when third on debut over 1160m on the Standside course. The son of Global View would have gained from the experience and if seeing out the extra distance on offer, he should make the natural improvement.
Race 3
MASTER CASPER raced in features in his first two career outings in the Western Cape, the latest of which was the Non-Black Type Cape Racing Sales Cape Slipper. It must be noted that multiple horses from that form line have come out and won since. He meets the right Maiden field this afternoon and should take a power of beating.
WOLF MOUNTAIN is an unraced son of Buffalo Bill Cody from the Mike de Kock stable with Richard Fourie booked to ride. If not too green in running, he should start his career on a positive note. The betting market will be the best guide with regards to him and the other first-timers in this contest.
HOWZIT BOET is a son of Willow Magic from the Fanie Bronkhorst yard with Chase Maujean in the irons. He is related to five-time winner Gimmetherain. If not too green in running, he should give a good account of himself.
Race 4
ERIMITAGE showed good improvement in his last start over 1400m at the Vaal. He was running on nicely at the finish that day. The son of Potala Palace is having his peak run today and may be the one to side with.
SCARS OF WAR produced a promising debut effort over 1200m on the Vaal Classic course. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. She carries a light mass of 53kgs and should give the males a run for their money.
STREWN SKY was a tad disappointing in his last start. He ran a good race when second in his penultimate start over 1160m on the Standside course. He is having his peak run today and must be included in all bets.
Race 5
SNEAK PREVIEW made the expected natural improvement when second in her last start over 1400m at the Vaal. She took the lead at the 200m mark but was caught late by Honorable Member. The daughter of Fire Away is a progressive type and she can go one better.
KYLIE’S ANGEL finished 0.3 lengths behind the top choice last time. The pair meet on the same weight terms today and there should not be much separating them at the finish.
EASY ON ME ran a decent race on debut over 1200m on the Vaal Classic course. She returns from a lengthy 37-week break, during which time she would have strengthened up. Gavin Lerena is booked to ride on her return and if fit, she should give a good account of herself.
Race 6
WILLIAM IRON ARM is lightly raced with good form lines to his credit. He took the lead at the 400m mark in the Grade 1 TAB SA Classic last time, but was outrun late. The son of William Longsword is the best-weighted runner in this contest. Calvin Habib retains the ride and he should take a power of beating.
BARBARESCO was an easy winner of his last start over 1450m on the Vaal Classic course. He finished 5 lengths behind the top choice in his penultimate run. He is 3kgs worse off at the weights today and may battle to turn the form around.
PYROMANIAC ran a fair race in the Listed WSB Sledgehammer last time. He has won once and finished third once from three starts on this course. From pole position, he should be involved at the finish.
Race 7
TROIS TROIS QUATRE stayed on when fourth over this distance on the Vaal Classic course last time. The son of Rafeef won his only attempt over this C&D. He takes a drop in class and Richard Fourie may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most.
SLINKY MAPIMPI’S last start must be ignored as he lost three lengths leaving the start and was reported to be distressed. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. His last victory came under Piere Strydom and he is one of the leading contenders.
THE BRIEF ran a fair race in his last start over 2000m on the Standside course. He won his penultimate run over this C&D. With a bit of luck from his wide draw of ten, he should have a say in the outcome of this contest.
Race 8
CIRCUS LIGHTS took on stronger company in his last start over this C&D. He finished second in his previous two runs over this C&D. He takes a drop in class and with Piere Strydom in the saddle, he can notch up his third-career victory.
LULU’S BOY’S last two starts have been good. He showed good speed in a work riders race last time, but was outrun late by Nkandla Gold. Should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
IN THE ETHER stayed on when second over this distance at the Vaal last time. She has won once, finished second twice and third once from six starts over this distance. The daughter of Announce will be mowing down the frontrunners
