BettingDiaryThe Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent plays host to this weeks Open Championship and we take a look at the tournament AND TOP South African betting.

Royal St George’s is a classical links golf course situated along the coast and with very little protection against the wind. The last time the Open Championship was hosted here it was Darren Clarke who emerged the victor to capture his first major at age 42. There are plenty of bunkers on the course and history suggests that players will have to accept an occassional bad break and patience will be one of the keys to victory. To win this week it will certainly help to be long off the tee, but a good iron game will probably be more important as Greens in Regulation has proved a crucial stat in the past.

Jon Rahm currently tops the betting boards at 17/2 with 3 players at 18/1, namely Brooks Koepka, Rory Mcilroy and Jordan Spieth and you can get 21/1 and better the balance.

SELECTIONS (World Sports Betting are paying 6 places)

Jon Rahm each way at 17/2

It does not take much imagination to put up the Tournament favourite, but on a tough course I expect the cream to rise to the top and Rahm is playing better than anyone in the world at the moment. He won the US Open two starts back and last week faded after a fast start to finish 7th.

Brooks Koepka each way at 18/1

Koepka has had 3 top 5’s in his last 4 starts and that includes a runner-up finish in the PGA Championship and a 4th place behind Rahm in the US Open. He finished 4th in his last Open Championship which was back in 2019 due to 2020 being cancelled and has had 3 Top 10’s in his last 4 Open starts.

Adam Scott each way at 100/1

I can’t keep loading the top end of the betting board and Adam Scott looks a nice price this week. A few years back he had a run of 3 successive finishes in the Top 5 at the Open Championship and I have noticed he has been playing some solid golf with 2 Top 20’s in his last 3 starts. Scott will need to find something extra to win this week and he certainly has the pedigree to do just that.

THE SOUTH AFRICANS

South Africa have 12 starters this week and many of them are in excellent form. Looking at the Top South African Market, Louis Oosthuizen is the 15/8 favourite ahead of Branden Grace 9/2, Bezuidenhout 5/1 and recent PGA Tour winner, Higgo is at 11/2.

It has not been an easy choice to pick just one of these players in my staking plan, but here goes.

Branden Grace each way at 66/1

Grace is a proven performer at links courses and his top finish at the Open Championship was 6th, 4 years ago. His game went off the boil a while ago, but he was 7th in the US Open and prior to that had a Top 5 finish on the PGA Tour.
