Race 1
MR HENLEY made the expected natural improvement when finishing third over 1100m at Hollywoodbets Greyville. He set the pace and the manner in which he stayed on at the finish was encouraging. The son of Master Of My Fate should enjoy the drop to 1000m and the blinkers will sharpen him up. Keagan de Melo steps into the saddle and the combination may find themselves in the winner’s enclosure.
CAPTAIN CATMAN showed good improvement when finishing second against winners last time. He raced from a handy position and stayed on nicely at the finish. The son of Captain Of All is a progressive type and with Grant van Niekerk in the saddle, he should go one better.
STEVIE GEE understandably raced green on debut, but the manner in which he finished off his race was encouraging. The son of Crusade would have gained from the experience and with the natural improvement that is expected, he should run a big race.
Race 2
GRINKOV is the best bet on the programme. He won a good race when shedding his maiden tag over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Greyville last time. Despite hanging in the closing stages, he quickened up well and drew clear of the opposition. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. The son of Twice Over will be at home over the 1600m and from his good draw of three, he should take a power of beating.
IN WITH A CHANCE ran on powerfully to win his maiden over 1400m on the Polytrack. The son of Silvano is a progressive type and should be suited to the 1600m. From pole position, he should throw out a big challenge to the top choice.
NATIONAL STAR set the pace in her last start over this trip, but found one too good in the form of Climate Control. She carries a handy galloping mass of 54kgs and should give the males a run for their money.
Race 3
PREEMPTIVE STRIKE raced from a handy position in his comeback run over 1400m on the Polytrack, fought hard but found one too good in the form of Patronage. He finished second in his only attempt on this course. The son of Twice Over will strip much fitter and he should have no issues with the 1750m. Sean Veale knows him well and he can notch up his second career victory.
ASTROCYTE has good recent form lines to his credit. The manner in which he finishes off his races suggests that he will enjoy the extra distance on offer. Should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
ESCAPE ARTIST raced wide around the turn last time, but stayed on nicely to finish fourth. She takes a drop in class and if this run has not come too soon, she should give the males a run for their money.
Race 4
This is a competitive Merit Rated 73 Handicap for the girls and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is CHELSEA FLOWER from the Carl Hewitson stable. She won a good race in her last start over 2000m on the Polytrack. She took the lead at the 300m mark, quickened up well and won easier than the margin suggests. Apprentice Kyle Strydom retains the ride and if repeating that effort in this type of field, she can follow up.
NAME OF THE GAME was running on nicely when third over 1900m on the Polytrack. She was unlucky that day as she had to be eased in the latter stages. She does take a rise in class, but is in a good space and should feature.
BELLA SWAN showed good improvement in her last start over 1800m on the Polytrack. The manner in which she stayed on at the finish was encouraging. With a bit of luck from her wide draw, she should run into the money.
Race 5
SWEET PEPPER is unbeaten from two starts, the latest of which was over this distance at the Vaal. She raced from a prominent position, fought hard and got up where it matters most. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. The well-bred daughter of Trippi would have come on from that outing and she will strip much fitter. Calvin Habib and Sean Tarry will be looking to retain their title.
MISS COOL was super-impressive when winning the Grade 2 SA Nursery last time. She is back against her own sex and if suited to the Hollywoodbets Scottsville track, she can notch up the hat-trick.
AMEENA won a good race in the Grade 3 Stelitzia Stakes last time. The manner in which she quickened up that day was eye-catching. She faces her toughest test to date, but clearly has ability and has a good chance of keeping her unbeaten record intact.
Race 6
PROPHET has been ultra-impressive in both his career victories to date. He showed good pace in the Grade 3 Godolphin Barb Stakes last time, found another kick and won with a ton in hand. He was reported to be cut into on his right hind leg that day which makes the victory that much more encouraging. The son of Querari should love the extra 100m on offer and should keep his unbeaten record intact.
KARANGETANG is much better than his last start in the Grade 2 SA Nursery as he was reported to be fatigued. He was impressive when winning his first two career outings. The earmuffs may do the trick on the son of Erupt and he should find a form return.
CLIFF TOP won a good race in the Listed East Cape Nursery. He was slow into stride, but the manner in which he quickened up and ran on was encouraging. The son of Canford Cliffs has ability and if all went well with his travels, he should be competitive.
Race 7
BIG BURN has top consistent form lines to her credit. She ran a very good race when finishing second in the Grade 1 Computaform Sprint last time, but found one too good in the form of Master Archie. She won her only attempt over this distance. The daughter of Elusive Fort has her first run on this course and if suited, she can notch up her sixth career victory.
CAPTAIN’S RANSOM is a multiple Grade 1 winner who is returning from an 18-week break. She has won her only attempt over this distance. She may not be wound up for this race, but has the class to be competitive.
UNDER YOUR SPELL won a good race in the Grade 2 WSB Fillies Guineas last time. Silver Darling has come out and won the Grade 1 Woolavington 2000 since. She won the Grade 1 Allan Robertson Championship over this C&D last year and merits healthy respect.
Race 8
COSMIC HIGHWAY ran on strongly in the Grade 2 WSB Guineas last time, but cost himself by hanging in the latter stages. The son of Gimmethegreenlight is unbeaten over this distance and may be at his best over sprint trips at this stage of his career. He will strip a much fitter horse and if keeping on a straight line, he should be the horse to beat.
ALESIAN CHIEF did not get off to the best of starts in the Grade 1 Computaform Sprint last time, but finished his race off nicely. He is having his peak run today and will be cherry-ripe. His best form has been under Muzi Yeni and may be hard to peg back if suited to this course.
BATTLE FORCE produced a decent comeback run over this distance at Hollywoodbets Greyville. He will strip a much fitter horse this afternoon and has a good chance of retaining his title.
Race 9
LAZULI ran a fair race against male company in her last start over 1200m on the Polytrack. She was reported to be not striding out that day. The daughter of Trippi will enjoy the extra furlong on offer and back against her own sex, she may find herself in the winner’s enclosure. Pole position is a big plus.
LADY SERENA won her last two starts well over this C&D. She received a three-pound penalty for her last victory, but may still be ahead of the handicapper and she can notch up the hat-trick.
SNOW TUNE won a good race in her last start over this distance on the Polytrack. She finished 2.85 lengths behind the second choice in her penultimate run. She is 1kg better off at the weights today and should finish closer as a result
