Race 1
DHOW SOLO showed good speed over 1160m on the Standside course last time, but was outrun late by Work Of Time. She is likely to adopt the same tactics and in this field, may be hard to peg back.
ENCHANTING LADY finished 1.75 lengths behind the top choice last time. The pair meet on the same weight terms today and she may have to settle for the same result.
JJ’S EAGLE finished 2.25 lengths behind the second selection last time. The pair meet on the same weight terms and she may battle to turn the tables. She is having her peak run today and will be cherry-ripe.
Race 2
MID WINTER WIND is the best bet on the programme. He should have finished closer to the winner over 1400m last time as he hung in the closing stages. He was reported to be fatigued that day. The son of What A Winter will love the drop to 1200m and from his good draw of two, he should take a power of beating.
GLAWARI showed good speed over 1160m last time, but found one too good in the form of Hillary Step. She gets the services of 4kgs claiming apprentice Nirvan Nastili which will assist her cause. She is carded to race on 18 January 2024 and her progress in that race will need to be monitored.
DONNA MO stayed on when third over 1400m in her local debut. She would have come on from the run and should strip much fitter. If the 1200m is not too short, she should have a say in the outcome of this contest.
Race 3
TURBO POWER ran on powerfully to win his last start over this distance on the Vaal Classic course. The blinkers have done the trick on the son of Twice Over. He would have come on from the run and can follow up.
SIMPLY MAGIC finished 0.2 lengths behind MAX THE OTTER last time. She is 3.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. She will strip a much fitter horse today.
MAX THE OTTER won a good race in his local debut over 1160m on the Standside course. He found betting support that day which suggests that he was showing good work at home. If repeating that effort, he should be competitive.
Race 4
TSAR BOMBA finished 1 length behind ARGO ALLEY last time. He is 1.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. He has won once and finished third five times from as many starts on this course. If not too far out of his ground turning for home, he can return to winning ways.
CAPTAIN OF GRIT finished 0.35 lengths behind TIRPITZ last time. He is 2kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. He always gives of his best and merits healthy respect.
TIRPITZ stayed on when sixth over 1400m on the Standside course last time. If finding the form of his penultimate run, he can feature.
Race 5
WILLOW EXPRESS has fair recent form lines to his name. He has won twice and finished second once from six starts on this course. He takes a drop-in class and if putting his best foot forward, he may find himself in the winner’s enclosure.
WARHAWK BOMBER followed up his maiden victory with a good second- place finish over 1450m on the Vaal Classic course. He gets the services of 2.5kgs claiming apprentice Kobeli Lihaba and is one of the leading contenders.
HAKAS KRAKAS shed his maiden tag in his local debut over this distance on the Standside course. He takes on stronger, but may be up to the task at hand.
Race 6
STREET ART should have finished closer to the winner last time as he hung outwards in the final 200m. He has won twice and finished second once from six starts over this distance. Piere Strydom is booked to ride and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most.
TERRA TIME was running on when fourth over 1800m on the Vaal Classic course last time. She won her only attempt over this C&D. Should the top choice fluff her lines, she may be the one to pick up the pieces.
TROIS TROIS QUATRE‘S last three starts have been good. He finished 0.25 lengths behind VIVA BRAZIL, three runs ago. He is 2.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned.
Race 7
A PLACE IN THE SUN is better than her last start over 1600m on the Vaal Classic course. It must be noted that multiple horses from that form line have come out and won since. On her previous form, she may be the one to beat in this field.
PRETTY IN PEARLS stayed on when second over this distance on the Vaal Classic course last time. She meets a similar line-up this afternoon and merits healthy respect. She is carded to race on 18 January 2024 and her progress in that race will need to be monitored.
PRINCESS AZARIAH finished 1.25 lengths behind the second selection last time. She is 1kg better off at the weights today and there should not be much separating the pair at the finish.
Race 8
This is a competitive Merit Rated 68 Handicap for the girls and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is TWICE AS WILD from the Grant Maroun stable. She has shown signs of needing her last two starts. She has won once, finished second once and third twice from eight starts on this course. She will be at peak fitness and with luck in running, she may find herself in the winner’s enclosure.
CERULEAN DANCER stayed on when second over 1500m on the Vaal Classic course last time. She is in a good space and from her good draw of three, she is one of the leading contenders.
SMELTING ran a good race when third in her last start over this distance on the Vaal Classic course. She has won once, finished second three times and third once from nine starts over this C&D. Craig Zackey may be able to get the best out of her
