The Canadian Open returns to the PGA Tour after 2 years off due to COVID and this week the players will tee up at the St. George’s Country Club in Toronto.
The St. George’s Country Club last hosted the Canadian Open back in 2010 when Carl Pettersson emerged the winner thanks largely to a tournament record 60 in the 3rd round.
The bunkers and the greens have been updated since then and with the US Open taking place next week expectations are that we will have fast greens and penal rough. The course is likely to suit the playmakers with accurate drives and approach shots rather than the bombers and adapting quickly to the greens will be crucial. St. George’s plays to a par 70.
US Masters Champion, Scottie Scheffler tops the betting boards at 9/1 with Justin Thomas and Rory Mcilroy both priced at 10/1. You can get 12/1 Cameron Smith, 14/1 Sam Burns and 20/1 and better the balance. There is not much of a South African interest this week and you have to go quite far down the betting to find Dylan Frittelli 110/1 and Dean Burmester at 140/1.

SELECTIONS:
Corey Conners each way at 22/1
You have to go back 68 years to find the last time a Canadian won his home Open, but Conners looks ready to make a big bid this week. He was disappointing when missing the cut in the PGA 3 weeks back, but last week finished in the Top 15 and prior to the PGA he hadn’t finished outside the Top 25 in 3 starts and this included a Top 10 finish. Conners has been knocking on the door and I am expecting him to break it down this week.
Tyrrell Hatton each way at 28/1
Hatton is the man I think will have a perfect game for this course and his last start was a Top 15 at the PGA Championship. He had some solid form before that although he has just not quite got into contention and I am backing him to string 4 good rounds together this week.
Keith Mitchell each way at 50/1
Mitchell caught the eye with a Top 20 finish last week. The 30 year old American is playing some good golf this year and has 4 Top 10 finishes and in a field that isn’t the strongest I am backing him to go close to his second PGA Tour victory.
Dylan Frittelli each way at 110/1
Nobody else jumps out at me this week and I have decided to throw the South African, Frittelli into the mix. His last start was a 35th place finish two weeks back and prior to that he has been solid making cuts without troubling the leader board. His best finish this season was a tie for 8th in the Valero Texas Open a few months back and like Mitchell he is looking for his second PGA Tour victory.
