BettingDiaryAfter last years November edition of the US Masters we are back to an April tee off at the August National Golf Club for the years 1st Major.

Augusta National plays to a par 72 and while distance off the tee is an advantage it is not the be all and end all as Bryson Dechambeau discovered last year. The greens are tricky and positioning of approach shots is crucial as is the ability to scramble when you miss the putting surface.

Defending champion Dustin Johnson looks likely to start favourite and is currently 17/2 with Dechambeau 10/1 and winner on the weekend Spieth (we were on him at 14/1) 11/1. New dad Jon Rahm is 12/1 along side Justin Thomas and you can get 18/1 and better the balance at the time of writing.

My bets:

Top South African – Christiaan Bezuidenhout at 5/2

Louis Oosthuizen is the 13/10 favourite but Bez has been knocking on the door in some big events and I fancy him to improve on his 38th place finish on debut last year. He also needs to beat Frittelli (3/1) who was an excellent 5th here in 2020 and previous champion Schwartzel (5/1)

Bryson Dechambeau each way at 10/1

Bryson put pressure on himself last year when he suggested the course should play to a 67 par with his length. It backfired and after an excellent 2021 he is back and seemingly with a more measured approach. If he can cut out the wild shots he should be right there come the back 9 on Sunday.

Jon Rahm each way at 12/1

I am expecting the new father to be mentally up for the challenge this week. Rahm has played Augusta 4 times with a top 30 on debut followed by a 4th, 9th and 7th place. His last 6 starts read 7,13,5,32,9,5) and he looks on the verge of winning again soon.

Lee Westwood each way at 50/1

Wouldn’t it be great if Westwood could finally shed his major duck something that looked impossible for the last few years. He has found great form though and had back to back 2nd place finishes a few weeks ago, one of which was in The Players Championship. From 2010 to 2016 he had 5 top 10 finishes at Augusta including a pair of runner up finishes and I think he is playing better now than he was then.

Corey Conners each way at 80/1

Conners is my roughie this week. He was in cracking form a few weeks back with successive top 5 and top 10 finishes and last week he was a decent 15th. This will be his 4th US Masters appearance and I am looking for him to improve on his best finish of 10th in 2020.

CT Pan each way at 250/1 and Top 20 at 9/2 (click here for top 20 betting)

If Conners is my roughie then CT Pan is my rank outsider. He finished an eye catching 7th on debut last year and finished 3rd in his last start. I thought he would be around 80/1 and am happy to take nearly 3 times the price.
