Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 1: MAKING MIRACLES(6)
Jockey: Ashton ARRIES - Trainer: Paul LAFFERTY

MAKING MIRACLES has kept her form well in recent outings and deserves her first career win. She got going too late when 4th over seven furlongs in a competitive field six days ago and will prefer the step-up to the mile. She is her 2.5kgs claiming apprentice's solitary ride on the card.

Race 2: THE BYZANTINE(11)
Jockey:  Bernard FAYD'HERBE - Trainer: Gavin VAN ZYL

THE BYZANTINE made smart improvement when producing a career best showing over this distance on the polytrack six weeks ago. The juvenile colt raced in open company under the lights for the first time in his short career but produced a powerful finish and was beaten just a short head into 2nd by Kali's Champ (placed 3rd since). The 3rd (Turf Conqueror) & 4th (Ratso Rizzo) placed entrants have gone close subsequently which boosts the formline and this son of Crusade should have more to offer on his peak showing against his own age group.

TOP BET

Race 6: MACDUFF(8)
Jockey: Anthony DELPECH - Trainer: Joey RAMSDEN

This event may be run at a more subdued gallop, particularly if the two reserve runners don't get into this contest. The imported Street Cry gelding, MACDUFF showed his affection for this surface with a narrow victory over MR ROY (0.5kg better off) in this contest twelve months ago. He has blossomed since and produced two high-quality efforts on his return to the polytrack this winter. In fact, the four-year old was very unfortunate to lose his unbeaten track record when failing by a whisker over seven furlongs a fortnight ago after being very slow into stride. He gets the services of another top jockey today and can quickly bounce back to winning ways.

Race 7: Champions Cup

The four-year old gelding IT'S MY TURN put up a gallant display with front-running tactics in the July but ultimately seemed just one run short of being at his best. The weight structure in today's Grade 1 contest makes his task extremely difficult of reversing that latest formline with the likes of MARINARESCO and BLACK ARTHUR, but this son of Dynasty could employ similar tactics to great effect in and event which lacks pace. It is most encouraging that top jockey Piere Strydom retains the ride on the son of Dynasty.

The Silvano gelding MARINARESCO won the hearts of many with a pulsating last performance to have even more supporters today as he attempts to defend his crown.

CAPTAIN AMERICA had the run of the race when he easily beat many of today's rivals, including MARINARESCO in the Gold Challenge over a mile last time and was freshened up after his conditioner opted against going for the 'July'. The six-year old is best treated at the weights on official ratings and is a huge contender for his yard who has had a great winter season in the province.

His stablemate SAIL SOUTH is the 'dark horse' here.

Race 9: LUCKY AT LAST(9)
Jockey: Weichong MARWING - Trainer: Nathan KOTZEN

LUCKY AT LAST made the expected improvement when he stayed on for 2nd over a mile on the grass at Scottsville recently. He finished just over two lengths ahead of TIME TRAVEL that day and should continue to progress. He gets the services of another top jockey and can open his new conditioner's account. The latter has fair recent form with front-running tactics and can earn a minor prize from his good draw. He is his jockey's solitary ride on the card.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY

Race 5: RODNEY(9)
Jockey: Grant V/NIEKERK - Trainer: Candice BASS-ROBINSON

There are some very classy sprinters on display in this Listed contest which should be run at a cracking speed. The imported grey gelding RODNEY has shown a liking for this surface with two eye catching displays to date and he should be highly competitive with just 52.5kgs on his back. The son of Tapit finished strongly for a close 3rd over this track & trip two weeks ago and it could pay to follow the progress of the runner-up Varbration (runs in prior event). The Drier yard holds a strong hand with their pairing of HORSE GUARDS and LLOYD'S LEGACY.
