Race 1

This is a weak Maiden Plate for the girls and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is LAW OF SUCCESS from the Paul Matchett stable. She ran a fair race in her last start over 1160m at Turffontein, against male company. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. She is back against her own sex and with the services of capable work rider Chamu Mabaya, she can shed her maiden tag.

SOUTHERN STYLE finished 1 length behind ELUSIVE FIRE last time. She is 2.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned.

HEARTLIGHT should have finished closer last time as she was carried outwards at the 200m mark. Her penultimate run when second over this distance was encouraging. She is having her peak run and can finish in the placings.

Race 2

QHAWE LAMI is better than his last start in the Grade 3 Protea Stakes. It must be noted that Lucky Lad has come out and won again since. His penultimate run in the Listed Storm Bird Stakes, catches the eye. The son of Duke Of Marmalade may be at his best over this distance at this stage of his career and back in Maiden Company, he may find himself in the winner’s enclosure.

OPEN HIGHWAY has produced two good third place finishes to date. The son of Var has plenty of scope and should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.

AMBRYM is an unraced daughter of Erupt from the Johan Janse van Vuuren stable and Keagan de Melo is booked to ride. She is related to Glittering Girl who has won once and placed three times from as many starts. If not too green, she should start her career on a positive note. The betting market will be the best guide with regards to her and the other first-timers.

Race 3

WOMAN OF POWER is an unraced daughter of Vercingetorix from the Mike de Kock stable with Keagan de Melo in the saddle. She is related to three-time winner Tuk Tuk. If not in need of this outing, she should start her career on a positive note. The betting market will be the best guide with regards to her chances.

CALA MURETTA was disappointing in her last start over 1160m at Turffontein. Her penultimate run when second over 1200m catches the eye. If finding the form of that effort, she should go close to winning.

SIGNORA BOMBA showed good improvement in a work riders’ race over this distance last time. Gavin Lerena takes the ride and if confirming that outing, she should run into the money.

Race 4

VIVA DE JANEIRO was a tad disappointing in his last start over 1450m on this course. His debut effort when third over 1000m at Turffontein was encouraging. The 1200m should be right up his alley. He meets the right field this afternoon and from his good draw of four, he should be the one to beat.

FOREVER FREE ran a fair race in his last start over 1000m on this course. He is having his peak run today and should be cherry-ripe. Muzi Yeni retains the ride and the combination must be included in all bets.

SAKA GOLD ran a decent race in his last start over this distance, despite reported to be coughing post-race. He is carded to race on 04 May 2023 and his progress in that race will need to be monitored.

Race 5

I’M A MAN showed good signs of a form return in a work riders race over this distance on the Turffontein Inside course last time. He makes his course debut and with a bit of luck from his awkward draw of nine, he can go one better.

BROADWAY’S last two starts have been decent. He finished 0.4 lengths behind the top choice last time. The pair meet on the same weight terms today and there should not be much separating them in the run down to the line.

US OPEN should have finished closer to the winner last time as he hung from the 300m mark. He is at his best over this distance and if keeping on a straight line, he should have a say.

Race 6

CALL TO GLORY has finished second in her last three starts. She set the pace over 1400m at Hollywoodbets Scottsville last time, but was outrun late by Faizah. The daughter of Kingman tries the mile for the first time and should be cherry-ripe. She jumps from a good draw of three and in this field, she should be the one to beat.

IMPRESSION ran a good race when second over 1800m in a work riders race last time. Keagan de Melo takes the ride and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of her where it matters most.

MISS CHRISTMAS ran a fair race in her last start over this distance on the Turffontein Inside course. She gets the cheekpieces fitted for the first time which should keep her mind on the task at hand.

Race 7

RIVER ROMEO showed some signs of a form return in his last start over this C&D. The son of Pomodoro takes a slight drop-in class today. He is drawn widest of all, but is likely to use his early gate speed to get across without using up too much energy. He may be hard to peg back in the run down to the line.

LUTHULI finished 1.75 lengths behind the top choice last time. He is 1kg worse off at the weights today and may battle to turn the form around.

OVER TWO YOU ran a good race when third over 1600m on the Turffontein Inside course last time. Piere Strydom retains the ride and if confirming his recent improvement, he should be involved.

Race 8

SURYAVARMAN was ultra-impressive when winning his last start over this distance at Hollywoodbets Greyville. He set the pace, found another kick and won with a ton in hand. The tongue-tie seems to have done the trick and he may be hard to catch.

LAETITIA’S ANGEL showed good speed when winning her last start over 1000m on the Turffontein Inside course. She has won twice and finished second once from six starts on this course. The 5yo mare should give the males a run for their money.

DEFENDER OF RIGHTS took the lead at the 200m mark last time, but was caught in the shadow of the post by After Hours. She has finished second twice and third once from as many starts over this C&D. The daughter of Flower Alley may be rewarded for consistency
