Race 1

NO FILTER made the expected natural improvement when third in her last start over this distance on the Classic course. She showed good speed but was outrun late. The daughter of Canford Cliffs is a progressive type and in this line-up, she may be hard to peg back.

DOLCEZZA has produced two decent efforts. She showed good pace over 1160m at Turffontein last time but was outrun late by Colorado Creek. Should the top choice fluff her lines, she may be the one to pick up the pieces.

DAMOSTAR ran a fair race in her last start over 1400m at Turffontein. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. The well-related daughter of Flower Alley may have more to come.

Race 2

CAPTAIN WARA should have won his last start as he hung and shifted away from the crop in the closing stages. He finished second on debut over 1100m on this course. Piere Strydom takes the ride and he should make amends.

HAWKBILL has produced two very good runs to date. He was touched off by Jerusalema Rain over this C&D last time. It must be noted that the horse that finished third that day has come out and won since. The son of Elusive Fort should be involved in the fight to the finish.

GEORGE HANDEL finished 2.45 lengths behind the top choice on debut. The pair meet on the same weight terms today and he may have to settle for the same result. The son of Oratorio would have come on from the run and should make the natural progression.

Race 3

TOTAL SURRENDER caught the eye on debut over this distance at Turffontein. He took time to find his feet, but finished his race off strongly. The son of Flower Alley would have gained from the experience and with the natural improvement that is expected, he should take a power of beating.

VIVA DE JANEIRO rallied late when third over 1200m on the Classic course last time. He will love the extra furlong on offer and is one of the leading contenders.

TURBO POWER is an unraced son of Twice Over from the Sean Tarry stable with Gavin Lerena in the saddle. He is carded to race on 18 May 2023 and his progress in that race will need to be monitored. The betting market will be the best guide with regards to his chances.

Race 4

This is a weak Maiden Plate for the girls and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is COUNT YOUR CHANCES from the Fanie Bronkhorst stable. She stayed on at the finish over 1450m on the Turffontein Inside course last time, but found one too good in the form of Tsitsikamma Pearl. The blinkers seem to have assisted the daughter of Count Dubois and she can get it right this afternoon.

UNITED WE STAND ran a decent race in her last start over 1200m on the Turffontein Inside course. The daughter of The United States will love the rise to 1400m. She is carded to race on 22 May 2023 and her progress in that race will need to be monitored.

GREEN BUBBLES produced some decent form before given a 21-week break. The rest would have done her the world of good and if not in need of the run, she can earn another cheque for her patrons.

Race 5

SWORD OF MERCY has shown good improvement in each of his outings to date. He raced from a handy position over this distance last time, but was caught late by Quantifier. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. He is a progressive type and may find himself in the winner’s enclosure.

WILLIAMSON fought hard in his last start over 1800m, but found one too good in the form of Wonderworld. He tries the 2000m for the first time and if seeing out the extra distance on offer, he should pose a threat.

DESERT FOX finished 2 lengths behind the second choice last time. The pair meet on the same weight terms today and he may have to settle for the same result.

Race 6

SILENT WAR caught the eye in his stable debut over 1100m at Turffontein last time. He jumped inwards leaving the start, but the manner in which he finished off his race was encouraging. It is a positive that Craig Zackey keeps faith in the ride and if not too far out of his ground at the halfway mark, he can notch up his third career victory.

SUGER AGRA was running on when third over 1000m on the Classic course last time. He has finished second in both his efforts over this C&D. Muzi Yeni takes the ride and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most.

CAPTAIN DIZZY is unbeaten from two starts for the Barend Botes and Yolandie Vosloo stable. He received a five-pound penalty for his last victory but is in a good space and can notch up the hat-trick.

Race 7

BLUE WATERS is better than her last start over 1450m on the Classic course as the jockey reported something to be amiss. Her penultimate run when second over 1200m on this course catches the eye. She continues to drop in the ratings and should give the males a run for their money.

CAPTAIN OF GRIT returns from a 29-week break which may have done him the world of good. He has won once, finished second once and third once from four starts on this course. Gavin Lerena does duty on his return and if fit, he should have a say in the outcome of this contest.

IGNATIUS is better than his last two starts. The 18-week break would have done him the world of good. On his best form shown, he should run a big race.

Race 8

IRONTAIL finished 3.75 lengths behind MABONENG last time. He is 5.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. He won his only attempt on this course. He will strip a much fitter horse today and with Muzi Yeni in the saddle, he should be competitive.

MABONENG has good recent form lines to her credit. She has won twice from five starts over this distance. She is carded to race on 22 May 2023 and her progress in that race will need to be monitored.

SPRING WILL COME moved up well over 1450m on the Classic course last time, but was outrun late by Back To Basics. He finished 2 lengths behind the second choice in his penultimate run. He is 1.5kgs worse off at the weights today and may battle to turn the form around.

Race 9

NAPOLEON ran a decent race in his last start over this distance on the Turffontein Inside course, but had excuses. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. He gets the services of Piere Strydom who may be able to coax that little bit extra out of him where it matters most.

LIBECCIO ran a fair race over this distance on the Turffontein Inside course last time. He finished 5.25 lengths behind LUTHULI, three runs ago. He is 6kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned.

LUTHULI is better than his last two starts suggest. He won his only attempt over this C&D. Gavin Lerena takes the ride and the pair merit healthy respect
