Race 1

IPHIKO returns from a 17-week break after two encouraging runs in the Western Cape. She showed good speed in the Non-Black Type The Franschhoek Motor Museum Winchester Sprint Cup last time, but was outrun late. The daughter of Trippi won her only attempt on this course. Richard Fourie takes the ride and she may be too good for this field.

FAUSTINO won this race last year. He showed signs of needing his stable debut on the Highveld last time and would have come on from the run. He will strip much fitter and can defend his title.

RENAISSANCE MAN held on where it matters most to get the better of Isivunguvungu last time. It must be noted that Isivunguvungu has come out and won a Grade 1 since. He is in a good space and can notch up the hat-trick.

Race 2

THISISWHATITMEANS produced a promising debut effort over 1000m on this course. He took time to find his feet, but the manner in which he finished off his race was eye-catching. The son of What A Winter would have gained from the experience and will love the extra furlong on offer. With the natural improvement that is expected, he should take a power of beating.

JURY’S OUT has produced two fair efforts to date. He has been gelded since his last outing which may have done the trick. Muzi Yeni takes the ride and he is one of the leading contenders.

DR FAUSTUS ran a decent race on debut over 1000m on the Turffontein Inside course. He would have come on from the outing and should make the natural progression.

Race 3

PROFESSOR LUPIN fly jumped leaving the start on debut, but the manner in which he finished off his race was encouraging. The son of Gimmethegreenlight would have gained from the experience and with the natural improvement that is expected, he should find himself in the winner’s enclosure.

LINKIN NAVIGATOR has produced three good runs to date. He showed good speed over this distance last time, but was outrun late. If all went well with his travels, he should throw out a big challenge to the top choice.

RAF’S ROCKET is an unraced son of Rafeef from the Dean Kannemeyer yard with stable jockey Keagan de Melo in the saddle. If not too green, he should start his career on a positive note. The betting market will be the best guide with regards to him and the other first-timers.

Race 4

MISS SHAIVI hails from the visiting Stuart Pettigrew yard. She has produced four decent efforts to date. She stayed on at the finish over 1200m on the Turffontein Inside course last time and will enjoy the step up to 1400m. Richard Fourie takes the ride and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of her where it matters most.

SIGN OF FATE has finished second in both her efforts to date. The daughter of Master Of My Fate is bred to enjoy the step up to 1400m. Her wide draw of 12 is an obvious concern, but with luck in running, she should be competitive.

KOMESANS PASSION took on winners in her last start over 1000m on the Turffontein Inside course. She steps up to the 1400m and if finding the form of her first two starts, she should have a say in the outcome of this contest.

Race 5

JADE’S CABERNEIGH set the pace over this C&D last time, but found one too good in the form of Far Horizon. The daughter of Gimmethegreenlight does not meet the strongest field and she may be hard to peg back in the run down to the line.

SHE CAN has run three fair races to date. It must be noted that the horse that finished fourth in her last outing has come out and won since. She will enjoy the drop to 1000m and is one of the leading contenders.

WHEN EVENING COMES showed some improvement in her last start over 1200m on the Polytrack. She returns from a 15-week break, during which time she would have strengthened up. It is encouraging that Keagan de Melo retains the ride and if fit, she should have more to come.

Race 6

This is a competitive Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes field and caution is advised. The tentative first selection is TRIP OF FORTUNE from the Candice Bass-Robinson yard. He was an impressive winner in the Grade 1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes last time. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. He is unbeaten from four starts over this distance and can keep that record intact.

DESERT MIRACLE ran on from last when winning the Grade 1 HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes last time. She won her only attempt over this C&D. If jumping on terms from her good draw of three, she should give the males a run for their money.

AL MUTHANA was doing his best work late in the Listed Gordon’s Gin Jet Master Stakes last time. The multiple Grade 1 winner has bigger plans this season, but he has the class to be competitive.

Race 7

GOLDEN HOSTESS was an impressive winner in the Non-Black Type The Magnolia last time. She was slow into stride, settled near the rear of the field and quickened up well to win going away. It must be noted that the horse that finished third that day has come out and won since. She will strip a much fitter horse and with a bit of luck from the widest draw, she should follow up.

HOLD MY HAND has cost herself at the start in her last two outings over further. She has won once and finished third once from three starts over this distance. Grant van Niekerk steps back into the saddle and if jumping on terms, she should pose a massive threat.

LADY OF POWER was not disgraced in the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer Oaks last time. She won the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Fillies Guineas, three runs ago. She is likely to race on the speed and may be hard to peg back in the run down to the line.

Race 8

This is an exciting field for the Grade 2 WSB Guineas. CHARLES DICKENS makes the trip to KZN after finishing 1.25 lengths behind SEE IT AGAIN in the Grade 1 SplashOut Cape Derby. He took the lead at the 200m mark that day, but was caught late. The son of Trippi is at his best over the mile and should enjoy racing on this course. He is the horse to beat.

COUSIN CASEY was a beaten favourite in the Grade 3 Byerley Turk last time. The son of Vercingetorix has won twice and finished second once from as many starts over this distance. He loves racing on this course and with a run under his belt, he should be competitive.

ANFIELDS ROCKET ran a good race when third in the Grade 1 HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes last time. He won a good race in the Grade 1 WSB SA Classic in his penultimate run. If suited to this course, he should have a say in the outcome of this contest.

Race 9

SWEET SYMPHONY finished 1.45 lengths behind ANCIENT EPIC last time. She is 2.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. The daughter of Twice Over takes a slight drop in class and from her good draw of four, she is capable of notching up her third career victory.

ANCIENT EPIC was given a peach of a ride when winning the Listed Kwa-Zulu Natal Stakes last time. It must be noted that the horse that finished third that day has come out and won since. She is in a good space and merits healthy respect.

OUR EMILY is a winner of her last four starts over this distance. She takes a step up in class, but carries a handy galloping mass of 54kgs and may be up to the task at hand.

Race 10

ROSH KEDESH ran a good race when third over 1400m on this course last time. The manner in which he stayed on at the finish that day was encouraging. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked. He will enjoy the return to the mile and with a bit of luck in running, he may find himself in the winner’s enclosure.

TIRPITZ has decent consistent form lines to his credit. He finished second in his only attempt over this distance. He has cracked a good draw of two and if not too far out of his ground turning for home, he should pose a threat.

BEYONDTHEBOUNDARY moved up well over 1800m on this course last time and stayed on to finish third. He takes a slight drop in class and from pole position, merits healthy respect
